Firewalls

Interactive Systems knows that your personal information must be secured at all times, and utilizes the assistance of Firewalls to safeguard that information. Firewalls are an important part of internet security. They guard systems and networks from hacking attempts and other malicious or unauthorized activity. It is important that you understand some basics on how the internet works and how ‘packets’ move around from network to network.

What is an IP Address

An IP Address is the way the computer gives itself an address. Just like sending a letter to someone else, the sender's and recipient's address must be included for the postal service (the internet) to deliver it successfully. When information is sent from one location to another on the internet, the information is converted into one or more "Packets."

What is a Packet?

When data needs to be sent from one place to another, the information must be converted to a packet. A packet is a small piece of information, written in binary, that when translated at the receiving computer will be converted back to the original file. If the information is too large for one packet, several packets are made to equally split up the information into smaller pieces. These packets would then be combined and converted to it's original form at the recipient's computer.

Example:

You want to send a message to your friend on their computer. Let's say their IP Address is "5.6.7.8" while your address is "1.2.3.4" You decide to type in "Hello Friend!" and click "Send."

As you can see in the diagram above, the message, after being converted into a packet, moves through the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and Internet Protocol (IP) to determine who the message is being sent to. Then, the packet moves to the hardware to reach the internet. From here, the packet will reach the destination computer, be converted back into the original message and displayed on your friend's computer, all usually in less than a second!

How Firewalls Work

Data that is harmful to your computer or personal / financial information can be sent from hackers using the same method as explained above. To prevent this from happening, firewalls monitor and inspect these packets, also known as "Traffic", and reject any suspicious or unauthorized content from accessing the computer. This firewall technique is known as "Packet Filtering."

The example below explains the typical operation of a firewall.

Additional Firewall Techniques

In addition to packet filtering, there are a few more ways a firewall can help protect your computer.

Application Gateway: Applies security mechanisms to specific applications, such as FTP and Telnet servers. This is very effective, but can cause performance degradation.

Circuit-level Gateway: Applies security mechanisms when a connection is established. Once the connection has been made, packets can flow between the hosts without further checking.

Proxy Server: Intercepts all messages entering and leaving the network. The proxy server effectively hides the true network addresses.

In practice, many firewalls use two or more of these techniques cooperatively.

A firewall is considered a first line of defense in protecting private information. For greater security, data can also be encrypted.

Is your computer running slow? Being attacked by frequent pop-ups? Malicious software may be to blame.

This malicious software may be in the form of a virus, adware or spyware. Many users are not really interested in the actual difference between them - the mere fact that they can wreak havoc on your system and result in anything from poor performance to a complete computer failure is enough to know they need to be avoided!

Our experienced technicians are experts in both neutralizing these threats and, more importantly, providing a solution to help ensure they don't crop up again in the future.

Here at Interactive Systems, we make sure our technicians are the best you can find in the field; we make sure that they have the appropriate technical expertise, experience and, above all, a great personality.
Interactive Systems classifies data loss into two categories:

Logical failure - the hard drive is in working order but some files or data cannot be accessed for logical reasons such as a lost partition or accidental reformatting.

Mechanical failure - the hard drive is not functioning. The most common causes are head crashes and motor failures.

What Causes Hard Drive Failure?

The possible causes for hard drive failure are almost limitless, but the main causes that Interactive Systems recovers a hard drive from include power surges, overwriting, physical damages, natural disasters, and viruses. Interactive Systems' staff are experts at recovering data from a failed hard drive, even when the situation looks completely hopeless.

Secure Communications

How secure is your connection? If not properly protected your computer or network is vulnerable to others trying to access your confidential information. Interactive Systems can help make sure your network and computers have a secure connection so that you can protect information from being viewed or modified by a unauthorized party.

Many groups with networks rely on just the minimal level of protection. But at that minimum level, their data, records and communications are not completely secure and can sometimes be just as risky as no protection at all, leaving a door open for unauthorized users to access all of your private documents. Let Interactive Systems make sure your are fully protected and that only authorized users have access to your data.

VPN

It is nearly impossible for someone to tap into or interfere with data in the VPN tunnel. If you have VPN client software on a laptop, you can have access to your company from anyplace in the world. Interactive Systems can help you easily acquire this for your home or business.

More about VPN

VPN gives very secure connections between private networks linked through the Internet. It allows remote computers to operate as if they were on the same secure network. You can be at home and access your company's computers in the same way as if you were sitting at work. The image below shows an example of a typical VPN network configuration.

SSL / TLS

How important is your data to you? One problem when you run a network is securing data that is being sent between applications across an untrusted network, such as the internet. Interactive Systems can integrate TLS (Transport Layer Security) / SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) to authenticate servers and clients and then use it to encrypt messages between the authenticated parties for your business.

TLS and SSL encrypts the segments of network connections at the Transport Layer end-to-end. TLS protocol allows client/server applications to communicate across a network in a way designed to prevent eavesdropping and tampering. TLS provides endpoint authentication and communications confidentiality over the Internet using cryptography.

The most common method for using SSL/TLS is through the access of secured web pages. The picture below explains how users connect to a website protected by SSL/TLS, which will secure any private data from being seen by anyone outside of this secure connection.

Security of data in transit over the Internet becomes increasingly necessary because of steadily growing data volume and importance. Nowadays, every user of a public network sends various types of data, from email to credit card details daily, and he would therefore like them to be protected when in transit over a public network. To this end, a practical SSL protocol has been adopted for protection of data in transit that encompasses all network services that use TCP/IP to support typical application tasks of communication between servers and clients.

Intrusion Detection

Intrusion Detection is vital in any size business. Interactive Systems will provide your company with the capability of detecting actions that attempt to compromise the confidentiality, integrity or availability of your resources through the use of an Intrusion Detection System.

In the diagram below, you will notice there are two IDS systems; one inside the network and the other outside. The IDS devices keep in constant contact of the Monitor Servers and inform them of any change in the network infrastructure.

The goal of Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) is to monitor the effectiveness of control systems by monitoring for evidence of attacks. Intrusion detection measures are often necessary to help control the risks associated with common vulnerabilities such as e-mail borne viruses, infected laptops and human factors. To be effective, however, an IDS solution requires disciplined processes and expert staff, as well as a carefully configured and tuned monitoring configuration.

Interactive Systems can take the guess-work out of Intrusion Detection by providing a cost-effective managed solution. We will install everything your business needs as well as actively monitor your network, notifying you of any suspicious activity.

Already have a custom security solution?

At Interactive Systems, we believe that a custom security solution such as an IDS is only as valuable as its effectiveness. We can perform intrusion tests on every level of the network infrastructure and provide a complete evaluation on how secure your business' network really is.

Phishing E-Mails

Millions of E-Mails are sent between users every day. Hackers have discovered they can use E-Mail technologies to obtain a user's personal information with little to no effort. These "phishing" E-Mails contact you as a company you do business with, claiming there has been an error with their system or detection of fraudulent activity, and ask the user to update their personal information for security. The links in these E-Mails direct the consumer to a fake website, designed exactly like the original company's, asking you to fill out their form with sensitive information.

In a recent study by Trusteer, 45% of their 3 million test subjects submitted their personal information to an unverified website.

With Interactive Systems' E-Mail protection, you'll be able to recognize these E-Mails much easier and help safeguard your identity.

What is Wireless Internet?

What areas do you serve?

We currently offer Wireless Internet in Solano County, CA and the following cities:

Fairfield, CA

Vacaville, CA

Suisun City, CA

Green Valley, CA

Elmira, CA

Dixon, CA

Davis, CA

Why should I get Wireless Internet?

Many individuals and businesses cannot get high speed connections to the Internet, whether via DSL or cable modem, due to the geographical constraints of these services. Wireless Internet is a fast, reliable, and cost-effective means to access the Internet.

How fast is Wireless Internet?

Our customers get Internet access at speeds on average at least 10 times faster than today's dialup 56k modems. See the pricing chart for specifics.

What equipment will I need?

You will need an antenna with line of sight to our Internet access point and some cable from the antenna to your computer(s). Your computer will need an Ethernet card, and a firewall is recommended.

Is it secure?

We use the latest encryption technology and leading-edge equipment and keep our equipment current to the leading standards.

Do I need a phone line?

No. Wireless Internet does not use phone lines.

How many computers can share this service?

Our multi-use plans allow simultaneous Internet access by all computers in a network.

Do you provide customer support?

Yes. You can call our customer service line and speak to a live technician during standard business hours Monday through Friday. Our Voicemail and paging system is available 24/7.

What are some other features of your service?

Unlimited Access!

No busy signals!

Full email service included!

File Transfer Protocol: Transferring files from your computer to the server, and back again.

In your FTP client, log in to your using using the following:

Host (or server): Your website url (without "http://www")
User: Your username
Password: Your password

When you log in as above, you are connected to your website's main folder. This is where the first page your visitors see will be.

If you should forget your ftp password, you may call us at (707) 425-7100 to have it reset.

How do I transfer files using FTP?

First, log in to your site using your FTP program.

You can upload files anywhere in your website's main folder, and you can create directories within it to store files, but you should not delete, move or rename any files in your home directory that already existed there when you first logged in. These files contain important configuration settings for your hosting account, and you may render your account inoperable if you touch any of these pre-existing files.

Are there any special considerations if I use a firewall or router?

You may need to enable "passive mode" in your FTP program if you are behind a firewall or router. Look in your FTP program's settings or preferences for "passive FTP" or "PASV."

E-Mail FAQs

Is E-Mail Secure?

Information in E-Mail is sent through many servers on the internet from your computer to its final destination. Do not ever include any personal information such as social security numbers, credit or bank account numbers, or sensitive data. There are, however, ways of using email encryption such as PGP/GnuPG.

Is E-Mail really from the person they're claiming to be?

Today, there are thousands of people who fall victim to identity theft from emails asking them to verify their personal information. These emails can ask for information such as credit card numbers, social security numbers, answers to secret questions you have made for the security of an online account or any other sensitive data. Occasionally, there may also be attachments that you are asked to download and open. If you ever receive an E-Mail that looks suspicious, delete it immediately. Only open E-Mails from people you know and trust.

What is the largest attachment I can send?

Most email systems are built to handle attachments of up to about 10MB. Do not attach and E-Mail large photos or other large documents. Even if your email goes through, the recipient may not be able to receive your large email because it may be above their inbox's allowed size.

Are links in E-Mails safe?

E-Mails can be programmed to show legitimate-looking links that will actually take you to a fake website to obtain your personal information (also known as "phishing sites.") At Interactive Systems, we recommend you do not click on any links in E-Mails from people you don't know.

DSL

DSL is the acronym for Digital Subscriber Line technology. DSL is a common internet service that makes use of the old copper phone lines to significantly increase bandwidth between the phone companies and their customers. DSL is a service that everyone should have if they are using a standard dial-up connection and want faster internet.

The DSL service uses your existing phone line and does not require an additional phone line. This gives you 24 hour access and does not tie up your line and cause it to have a busy signal if you’re on the web. In its various forms DSL offers users a choice of speeds ranging from 32 Kbps to more than 50 Mbps. These digital services can be used to deliver bandwidth-intensive applications like video on demand and distance learning.

Today DSL is putting high-speed Internet access within the reach of homes, small and medium-size businesses. DSL takes existing voice cables and turns them into a high-speed digital link. Over any given link, the maximum DSL speed is determined by the distance between the customer site and the Central Office.

Interactive Systems offers a range of speeds so customers can choose the rate that meets their specific business needs. At the customer premises, a DSL modem connects the DSL line to a local-area network (LAN) or an individual computer. Once installed, the DSL modem provides the customer site with continuous connection to the Internet.

DSL: Frequently Asked Questions

What is DSL?

DSL is a connection that uses your existing phone line for high speed access to the internet.

Why should I get DSL?

Many individuals and businesses cannot get high speed connections to the Internet, whether via DSL or cable modem, due to the geographical constraints of these services. Wireless Internet is a fast, reliable, and cost-effective means to access the Internet.

How fast is DSL?

Our customers get internet access at speeds on average at least 10 times faster than today's dialup 56k modems.

What equipment will I need?

You will need a DSL modem to use our DSL service. Your computer will need an Ethernet card, and a firewall is recommended.

What areas do you serve?

DSL is available throughout California (some area not serviceable. Please Contact Us for more details.)

Do I need a phone line?

Yes. An active phone line for DSL is required to receive service.

How many computers can share this service?

Our DSL only works on one computer at a time. However a router may be used with our modem to allow for multiple connections. Routers are available for purchase from Interactive Systems

Do you provide customer support?

Yes. You can call our customer service line and speak to a live technician during standard business hours Monday through Friday. Our Voicemail and paging system is available 24/7.

What are some other features of your service?

Unlimited Access!

No busy signals!

Full email service included!

Domains

The web has become an essential part of everyday life. Your domain name is your identity on the internet. The Internet is a vast network of millions of interconnected computers. Each of these computers is assigned a unique address called an Internet Protocol (IP) address - just like a telephone number.

The Domain Name System (DNS) helps users to find their way around the Internet. The DNS makes using the Internet easier by allowing a familiar string of letters (the "domain name") to be used instead of the IP address.

One of the most important things you can do for your website to ensure higher placement in the search engines and an easier way for people to find you is to register your own domain name. If you own your company, you should carefully select your domain name, as it represents both your storefront and your online address. Not only should the name you choose be descriptive of what your site entails but it should also be easy for people to remember so they can come back to it easily. You may research domain names using our Domain Availability feature.

Interactive Systems is affiliated with an ICANN accredited registrar for the .com, .net, .org and .info domains. Once you've chosen a domain name, you will need to register it and set up a hosting account. Interactive Systems can handle all of the details of domain registration for you.
